Republican state Supreme Court candidate Jefferson Griffin has taken legal action to intervene in a federal lawsuit brought by the North Carolina Democratic Party regarding state ballot challenges. Griffin filed a motion on Monday arguing that the Democrats’ lawsuit threatens his chances of winning the November 2024 general election for a seat on the North Carolina Supreme Court. He is asking the court to grant his motion to intervene to protect his interests in the case.
Griffin’s lawyers also argued against linking the Democrats’ lawsuit to another case challenging voter registrations in North Carolina. They stated that the two cases are different and should not be combined.
Meanwhile, the North Carolina Court of Appeals is expected to decide on Tuesday whether the state elections board must issue a decision on Griffin’s election protests. Griffin has requested an order mandating a decision by the end of the day Tuesday, while the elections board argues that they are working expeditiously to resolve the matter.
In ongoing developments, a hand-to-eye recount in Griffin’s race against incumbent Democrat Allison Riggs is expected to be completed on Tuesday. After a statewide machine recount, Riggs currently leads Griffin by 734 votes. If the hand-to-eye recount shows a significant difference in vote totals, a third recount involving a hand recount of every ballot in the state could take place.
