Luigi Mangione, the 26-year-old suspect in the shooting death of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, has been arrested in Pennsylvania and charged with weapons, forgery, and other crimes. Mangione was recognized at a McDonald’s in Altoona, Pennsylvania, by someone who then called local police, leading to his arrest. He was found with a firearm suppressor, a mask similar to that worn by the gunman, a fraudulent New Jersey ID, and a handwritten document indicating his motivation.
Mangione, who has ties to Maryland, San Francisco, and Honolulu, studied at the University of Pennsylvania and had recently worked in Santa Monica. Prior to his arrest, police had released images of him in connection with Thompson’s murder. The arrest brought relief to Thompson’s family and colleagues, with a private funeral planned for him.
The New York police department and US marshals are conducting further investigations, including reviewing surveillance footage from Greyhound bus stops in Atlanta. Police had previously searched a Central Park lake for evidence related to the shooting. Mangione’s arrest was a result of collaboration between local, state, and federal agencies. The investigation into Thompson’s murder is ongoing, and UnitedHealthcare has vowed to continue cooperating with law enforcement. Thompson’s death had elicited mixed reactions due to his role in the health insurance industry.
