The King and Queen of Spain, along with high-ranking Spanish politicians, presided over a ceremony in the cathedral of Valencia to honor the victims of the tragic floods that occurred in October. The event was attended by 400 relatives of the deceased who were provided a space in the central nave of the building. The mayors of affected municipalities and various government officials were also present at the funeral.
Spanish President Pedro Sánchez, who faced criticism for his handling of the disaster, was notably absent from the ceremony. Some of the victims’ loved ones expressed concerns that politicians were using the event to improve their public image.
Despite some controversy, the memorial service, led by Archbishop of Valencia Enrique Benavent, proceeded with the King and Queen of Spain offering condolences to the families of the victims. The ceremony included the singing of the hymn of the Virgen de los Desamparados and was attended by parish priests, Valencian bishops, the Episcopal Council, and the Chapter of the Cathedral.
Security measures were in place as some of the victims’ relatives expressed anger towards politicians, calling them “murderers”. Overall, the funeral served as a somber and respectful tribute to those who lost their lives in the devastating floods that impacted the region.
