President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine expressed openness to a diplomatic end to the ongoing conflict with Russia and even hinted at the potential deployment of Western troops in Ukraine. Zelensky acknowledged the devastating toll the war has taken on Ukrainian soldiers, with around 43,000 killed and 370,000 wounded. He also disclosed that almost 800,000 Russian troops are currently deployed in Ukraine.
Despite calls from Western allies to lower the draft age for Ukrainian soldiers, Zelensky emphasized the importance of prioritizing the preservation of lives over using younger soldiers for military purposes. He thanked world leaders, including Donald Trump and Emmanuel Macron, for their efforts to secure peace in Europe.
Additionally, Zelensky raised the idea of freezing the war lines with Russia and discussed the potential deployment of foreign troops until Ukraine could join NATO. The Institute for the Study of War highlighted the significant economic strain on Russia due to the ongoing conflict in Ukraine, leading to mounting costs and casualties.
The European Union’s member states have approved a new payment of 4.2 billion euros to support Ukraine’s economy as it continues to fight against Russia. Amidst these developments, Zelensky remains committed to seeking a diplomatic resolution to end the war and save lives.
