Is Germany’s preparedness for war crucial? | Global Updates

Despite Germany’s history of anti-war sentiment due to the scars left by World War II and the Cold War, there are signs that attitudes towards militarization may be shifting. Last October, a peace rally in Berlin saw large crowds advocating against war, with many expressing concerns about Germany strengthening its military and supplying weapons to Ukraine.

While protesters like Petra and Will emphasized the importance of peace and the dangers of war, a small counter-protest showed support for arming Ukraine. This division reflects a wider societal split, with almost half of Germans against further arms delivery to Ukraine, while 38% are in favor.

German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius’s pledge to increase defense spending to between 3% and 3.5% of GDP has gained support from half of the population, including former pacifist Frederika. She expressed a shift in her views after Russia’s attack, stating, “in the face of a dictatorship, you can’t be defenseless.”

Historian and author Katja Hoyer highlighted the long-standing aversion in Germany towards anything military, stemming from its tumultuous past. This sentiment has been reflected in attitudes towards rearmament and supporting military efforts. The ongoing debate between pacifism and the need for defense reflects a complex and evolving national dialogue in Germany.
