California judge found guilty of killing his wife

California judge Jeffrey Ferguson was convicted of second-degree murder for shooting his wife, Sheryl Ferguson, following a drunken argument in their Anaheim Hills home in August 2023. Despite Ferguson’s claim that the shooting was accidental, jurors rejected his testimony and convicted him of intentionally killing his wife. Prosecutors stated that Ferguson had been heavily drinking and pointed a gun at his wife during an argument about money before ultimately shooting her. The couple’s son tried to intervene and wrestle the gun away from Ferguson before calling 911 and attempting to perform CPR on his mother. Meanwhile, Ferguson texted his colleagues saying he had shot his wife and apologized. Ferguson, who has been serving as a judge since 2015 after working as a prosecutor, initially posted a $1 million bail but was taken back into custody after violating the terms of his release by consuming alcohol. Following the guilty verdict, Ferguson was taken back into custody. The case was retried after the initial trial ended in a hung jury, with jurors ultimately reaching a guilty verdict after just one day of deliberations. Prosecutors highlighted the premeditated nature of the crime and criticized Ferguson’s actions as “cold and calculated.” The sentencing for Ferguson is scheduled for June 13, with a maximum sentence of 40 years to life in prison.
