Iran Asserts Civilian Enrichment Rights as Nuclear Talks Resume
Tehran, Iran – As negotiations resume in Muscat, Iran has reiterated its claim to enrich uranium for civilian purposes, firmly stating that this right cannot be negotiated. The Iranian delegation, led by Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi, is engaged in a fourth round of indirect talks with the United States, mediated by Oman.
During an interview on Sunday, Araghchi emphasized that civilian enrichment is a legal right for Iran, achieved at significant cost, including the loss of nuclear scientists to targeted assassinations. He acknowledged U.S. demands for assurances that Iran will not pursue nuclear weapons but insisted that enrichment activities remain non-negotiable.
The discussions arise in the shadow of the 2015 Iran nuclear deal, which allowed for civilian nuclear activities but limited enrichment levels to avert the development of nuclear arms. Since the U.S. withdrawal from this agreement in 2018, under President Donald Trump, tensions have escalated, with the U.S. imposing stringent sanctions aimed at reducing Iranian oil exports to zero.
Ahead of these talks, the U.S. has signaled a desire for a comprehensive dismantling of Iran’s nuclear program, with suggestions that Iran must also import enriched uranium. Recent remarks by U.S. officials have drawn criticism from Tehran for their contradictory nature, complicating the negotiations.
The talks, initially set for early May, faced postponements amid logistical concerns and geopolitical tensions, including escalating rhetoric about military action against Iran. Despite ongoing sanctions and pressure, Iran continues its oil exports, primarily to China, as it enriches uranium levels up to 60%, nearing weapons-grade capability.
Both sides remain at a critical juncture as diplomatic efforts aim to navigate these complex challenges while ensuring regional stability and security.
