Ex-Los Angeles Deputy Mayor to Plead Guilty in Bomb Threat Incident

Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass recently addressed the implications of the upcoming 2028 Olympics, highlighting both challenges and opportunities for the city. Concurrently, a former deputy mayor, Brian K. Williams, has agreed to plead guilty to a felony charge for falsely reporting a bomb threat at City Hall in October 2024 while in office. Prosecutors have indicated that this charge carries a maximum sentence of ten years in federal prison.

At the time of the incident, Williams was serving as the deputy mayor for public safety. An investigation led by the FBI revealed that Williams had fabricated the bomb threat during a virtual meeting, using a voice application to disguise the origin of the call. He reported receiving a threatening call from an unknown person, claiming dissatisfaction with the city’s support for Israel and the intent to place a bomb in City Hall. Following this, Williams alerted local law enforcement and sent messages to Mayor Bass and other officials.

The Los Angeles Police Department conducted a search but found no evidence of explosives. Investigators later determined that Williams had orchestrated the threat himself, calling his city phone from his personal device to create the illusion of an incoming threat. Assistant Director of the FBI’s Los Angeles Field Office, Akil Davis, condemned Williams’ actions, emphasizing the betrayal of public trust by government officials.

Williams, appointed by Mayor Bass in February 2023, had a prior career in public safety and legal roles. He is scheduled to make his initial court appearance in downtown Los Angeles soon. The case underscores both accountability in public office and the complexities surrounding public safety in large urban environments.
