North Carolina Man Charged After Officer-Involved Shooting in Johnson County

Investigation Leads to Charges in Johnson County Officer-Involved Shooting

Last Updated May 26, 2025

An investigation by the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation (TBI) has culminated in charges against Joey Allen Ponce, following an officer-involved shooting in Johnson County last month. The incident occurred on April 22 when deputies from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office encountered a vehicle linked to a "Be On The Lookout" (BOLO) alert from Watauga County, North Carolina.

Ponce, 34, was wanted for armed robbery earlier that day. Deputies attempted to conduct a traffic stop, but Ponce fled, leading them on a pursuit. The chase ended in the 5000 block of Highway 421, where Ponce exited his vehicle and began firing at the officers. During the confrontation, he struck and injured one deputy, who returned fire, injuring Ponce in the process.

Following the shooting, Ponce was transported to a local hospital for treatment. TBI agents, under the direction of 1st Judicial District Attorney General Steve Finney, obtained multiple warrants for Ponce. He faces serious charges, including two counts of Attempted First Degree Murder, Evading Arrest, Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of a Dangerous Felony, and Possession of Stolen Property.

Upon his release from the hospital, Ponce was booked into the Carter County Jail with a bond set at $750,000. It’s important to note that the charges against him are accusations; he is presumed innocent until proven guilty in a court of law.

This case highlights ongoing concerns regarding violent crime and law enforcement interactions in the region, bringing attention to the need for continued dialogue and strategies to address such incidents. The investigation remains ongoing as authorities gather further evidence to ensure accountability.
