UNC Charlotte Launches Unique Sports Analytics Degree This Fall
CHARLOTTE, N.C. — The University of North Carolina at Charlotte is set to introduce a Bachelor of Science in Sports Analytics this upcoming fall semester, marking a significant development in the field of sports education in the Southeast. This program will distinguish itself as the only sports analytics bachelor’s degree in the region, with only four other institutions nationwide offering similar programs: Rice, Akron, Syracuse, and California Baptist.
Associate Professor Abbey Thomas emphasized that UNC Charlotte’s program will uniquely focus on human performance, recognizing the growing role of analytics in sports beyond just game performance. "Analytics is vital in modern sports for gaining competitive advantages in all areas, from front office decisions to athletic training," she noted.
The program comes amidst a rising emphasis on data-driven decision making in sports, exemplified by Carolina Panthers and Charlotte FC owner David Tepper, who prioritized analytics upon acquiring the Panthers in 2018.
Students enrolled in this new program will develop technical skills, including coding and artificial intelligence applications, and will have opportunities to intern with 19 NCAA Division I teams. They can also gain insights from North Carolina’s professional sports organizations.
Career options for graduates range from sports analysts to professional roles in sports medicine, athletic training, and strength and conditioning. The program will be co-directed by Thomas and 1994 alum John Tobias, who brings expertise as a sports analytics lecturer and senior statistical analyst for ESPN.
This groundbreaking initiative highlights UNC Charlotte’s commitment to integrating health sciences and data science, paving the way for innovative careers in the sports industry.
