Texas Border Sheriff Reports Significant Decrease in Illegal Crossings

Dramatic Decline in Illegal Migrant Crossings Observed in Texas County

Terrell County, TX – Sheriff Thaddeus Cleveland of Terrell County, which shares 54 miles of the U.S.-Mexico border, reported a significant decrease in illegal migrant crossings since the Trump administration began its border policies. He noted a "dramatic decline" in apprehensions, particularly in the last two weeks, which coincided with a full moon period typically known for increased border activity.

According to U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP), April saw a staggering 93% drop in year-over-year apprehensions, with figures plummeting from 129,000 in April 2024 under President Biden to just 8,383 this month under Trump. This trend has resulted in fewer challenges for local law enforcement, which previously faced record levels of illegal crossings and fatalities.

Former Trump administration border czar Tom Homan echoed Cleveland’s observations, asserting that under Trump, the U.S. border had become "the most secure in the nation’s history." He attributed this to various Executive Orders that strengthened border security measures, including the "Remain in Mexico" policy and ending catch-and-release practices.

Additionally, Cleveland highlighted that the decline in crossings could lead to potential closures of migrant processing facilities, similar to the shutdown of an immigrant center in San Diego due to decreased illegal crossings. With dwindling numbers, Cleveland believes these resources could be better utilized elsewhere along the border.

As the situation shifts, local officials continue to monitor the impact on border security and the resources available for managing the evolving landscape. The future of migrant processing facilities remains uncertain as apprehension rates decrease.
