Press Release: Community Rallies for Recovery After Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina
September 2024 witnessed Hurricane Helene wreaking havoc across Western North Carolina, causing extensive destruction and displacing countless families. The hurricane resulted in over 1,400 landslides and extensive damage to infrastructure, leaving communities isolated and without essential resources, including clean drinking water.
Amid this disaster, Boone-based nonprofit Wine To Water mobilized immediately, leveraging its experience in global humanitarian relief to address local needs. "I felt like I was transported back to where I’ve seen destruction from flooding in Nepal," said Courtney Mattar, Director of Partnerships at Wine To Water. The organization swiftly shifted focus to assist affected communities, with support from long-time partner Lenovo, which dispatched the first truck of clean water.
Over the following weeks, Wine To Water expanded efforts from emergency relief to long-term recovery. They focused on distributing water filters, repairing water sources, and providing more than 55 tiny homes to families displaced by the hurricane. This safe housing offers crucial warmth and security as winter approaches.
Technology played a pivotal role in recovery, with Lenovo previously donating 750 computers through the American Red Cross Disaster Responder Program. These devices became vital in local shelters, enabling displaced individuals to connect with loved ones and access essential services. The collaboration ensured that the Red Cross was prepared to respond effectively to the crisis.
Additionally, a partnership with Operation Connect Carolinas helped restore internet access, vital for community communication and coordination.
While the recovery journey in Western North Carolina is ongoing, the solidarity displayed by neighbors, nonprofits, and corporate partners demonstrates a powerful commitment to rebuilding and resilience. Thanks to organizations like Wine To Water and the Red Cross, vital progress is being made, one home at a time.
