North Carolina Ranks High in Disaster Preparedness Amid Natural Threats
North Carolina, notorious for its vulnerability to natural disasters, has emerged as a beacon of resilience, ranking second in the U.S. for disaster relief charities per capita, according to SmileHub’s 2025 report. The state stands 15th nationally for disaster preparedness, evaluated through 14 critical metrics, revealing a proactive approach to disaster management.
Despite its favorable ranking in disaster planning and funding—positioned fourth nationwide—North Carolina faces significant risks. It ranks 45th for disaster risk and long-term damage, classifying it among the top five states most vulnerable to natural calamities. This assessment comes in light of last year’s Hurricane Helene, which devastated parts of western North Carolina, just as the state braces for another hurricane season beginning June 1.
The report underscores the state’s commendable disaster readiness, factoring in critical assets such as medical personnel, National Guard members, and access to communication technology. Notably, North Carolina excels compared to other high-risk states like Florida, Texas, and South Carolina.
Despite the resilience demonstrated by relief organizations, recovery efforts from past hurricanes remain challenging. The Office of Recovery and Resiliency (NCORR) has faced criticism for its inefficiencies in managing recovery projects from Hurricanes Matthew and Florence since its inception in 2018. Nevertheless, the remarkable presence of disaster relief charities positions the state favorably, highlighting its community-driven response to natural disasters.
In a concerning national context, NOAA has reported 2024 as the 14th consecutive year of ten or more billion-dollar disasters in the U.S. Meanwhile, FEMA statistics reveal that only 45% of U.S. adults feel prepared for such emergencies, signaling an ongoing need for increased awareness and readiness.
With four North Carolina charities ranking in the top ten for disaster relief, the state is harnessing local resources to forge a path toward greater preparedness and recovery resilience.
