Press Release: North Carolina DMV Tackles Longstanding Challenges Amid Initiatives for Improvement
RALEIGH, NC – In a press conference on Friday, North Carolina Division of Motor Vehicles (NCDMV) Commissioner Paul Tine, joined by NC Department of Transportation Secretary Joey Hopkins, Governor Josh Stein, and others, unveiled a plan to address persistent issues plaguing the DMV. The announcement comes after growing pressure from lawmakers and the Office of the State Auditor, spurred on by years of customer complaints.
The recent House budget proposal includes measures aimed at privatizing some DMV services, reflecting concerns that the current system would falter in a competitive market. State Auditor Dave Boliek revealed an audit nearing completion, with 14 auditors reviewing DMV operations. Tine and other officials expressed gratitude for this oversight, emphasizing its role in identifying areas for improvement.
At the conference, challenges stemming from population growth, inadequate staffing, and outdated technology were acknowledged. On average, about 3,900 people are standing in line each morning, highlighting the urgency for reform.
Governor Stein emphasized the need for efficiency, stating that North Carolinians should not have to endure long waits or lose workdays for DMV services. To tackle these issues, Tine plans to modernize systems, improve online services, and increase staff levels—requesting 85 additional positions.
Among immediate changes are three pilot programs designed to expedite service at the East Raleigh DMV and new core principles focusing on service, efficiency, agility, and accountability. Improvements to the DMV website include a Real ID tool and clearer outlines of services.
While Tine acknowledged the long road ahead and potential growing pains, he affirmed a commitment to empower DMV staff and requested public patience during the transition. "These are just the first projects we’re announcing, but we are determined to enhance the experience for all North Carolinians," he stated.
