Tragic Loss at Graduation: Mom Dies Just Steps Away from Ceremony
Winston-Salem, NC – A North Carolina family is mourning the loss of Jean Byrd, a beloved mother, who tragically collapsed and died just moments before witnessing her daughter Meilean graduate from Parkland High School. The incident occurred on May 23, when Byrd, originally from Philadelphia, was walking through the parking lot of Joel Coliseum with excitement to celebrate her daughter’s achievement.
Just steps away from the venue, Byrd collapsed and became unresponsive. Her son, Marquan Matthews, was present at the ceremony and immediately rushed to perform CPR on their mother, while Meilean remained unaware of the unfolding tragedy inside the auditorium. Despite the quick response, Jean Byrd sadly passed away about an hour later, merely 200 feet from the graduation site.
When Meilean was alerted to the situation, a caring guidance counselor escorted her from the ceremony, and she was taken to the hospital to be with her mother during her final moments.
The Byrd family is now faced with planning a memorial for Jean Byrd, who was cherished by her loved ones. They hope to fulfill her final wish of being laid to rest in her hometown of Philadelphia. In memory of their mother, the family has launched a GoFundMe campaign to help cover funeral expenses and to support their grieving family during this incredibly difficult time.
The community’s outpouring of love and support reflects the profound impact that Jean Byrd had on those around her, making her sudden passing all the more heartbreaking for family, friends, and fellow graduates.
