Texas City Communications Team Member Arrested for Impersonation
Texas City, Texas (KTRK) — Derek Miller, a member of the Texas City communications and marketing team, was arrested Tuesday on charges of online impersonation. He is accused of creating a fraudulent Facebook profile that impersonated La Marque City Council Member Joseph Lowry, a third-degree felony.
This arrest comes amid a tumultuous period for Lowry, who is facing scrutiny within the La Marque City Council. Discussions of potential censure have surfaced, driven by allegations of online harassment directed at him from City Manager J.B. Pritchett’s legal representative. A cease and desist letter has been issued against Lowry, heightening tensions among local officials.
When questioned about the allegations, Lowry defended his approach as an elected official, stating, "As a journalist, you’re allowed to ask questions… and I don’t mind asking the hard questions." He believes his critical stance has garnered him political adversaries, claiming he was blocked from the Texas City Facebook page due to his outspoken views.
Lowry revealed that last October, false posts began appearing under a profile impersonating him, which praised Texas City officials and contradicted his own opinions — further complicating the ongoing controversies. Despite sharing a contentious relationship with Texas City officials, he insisted he has never met Miller.
Efforts by ABC13 to reach Derek Miller for comments went unanswered, and Texas City officials declined to comment on the personnel matter, merely stating, "We do not comment on personnel matters." Lowry quipped about the situation, likening it to a Netflix movie.
