Farmers and Small Business Owners Converge in Raleigh to Address Trade War Effects
RALEIGH, NC – In a gathering earlier this week, farmers, small business owners, and industry experts convened to assess the ongoing trade war’s repercussions on their operations and strategies for navigating future challenges. The event, organized by Farmers for Free Trade, follows President Donald Trump’s recent announcement of a 10% tariff on imports, which he claims will bolster the economy and safeguard American jobs.
“Our farmers seek market access rather than broad tariffs,” stated Brian Kuehl, executive director of Farmers for Free Trade. Concerns were raised that universal tariffs could potentially burden farmers and ranchers who rely on trade for survival.
According to a recent report, importers faced $515 million in tariffs in April 2025, marking a staggering 190% increase from the previous year, despite a 14% drop in import value. Dr. Michael Walden, a professor at North Carolina State University, explained that tariffs act as a tax on importers, ultimately raising expenses for farmers due to retaliatory tariffs from other countries, particularly impacting North Carolina farmers who export nearly $5 billion annually.
Business owners shared their experiences with rising costs linked to tariffs on imported parts. “Business is biology; it’s a living thing,” remarked Mike Jones, CEO of MAE Farms, emphasizing the necessity for businesses to foster strong relationships with suppliers and customers to mitigate the financial impacts of tariffs.
Uncertainty looms over the trade climate as the fluctuating tariff landscape complicates planning for farmers and small business owners alike. As they grapple with supply chain disruptions and shipping delays, many are opting to maintain existing equipment rather than invest in new machinery. “It’s not the time to buy a new tractor,” Jones warned.
As the trade war continues, maintaining healthy relationships with customers and suppliers emerges as a critical strategy for navigating upcoming challenges.
