Nationwide "No Kings" Protests Set for Flag Day in North Carolina

Protests are anticipated across North Carolina this Saturday, June 14, as part of a wider “No Kings” initiative designed to challenge President Donald Trump’s leadership. The demonstrations coincide with the White House’s celebration of the U.S. Army’s 250th anniversary and Trump’s birthday.

Organized by a coalition including Indivisible, the Human Rights Campaign, and the ACLU, the protests aim to reclaim the national flag, as stated on their website: “The flag doesn’t belong to President Trump. It belongs to us.” Supporters emphasize their commitment to democracy through nonviolent action against perceived authoritarianism.

Raleigh, Durham, Chapel Hill, and several other towns are slated to participate, with estimates suggesting that over 2,000 attendees could gather in Raleigh alone. Organizers urge a de-escalation approach to any disagreements that might arise during the demonstrations. Weapons, even those legally permitted, are discouraged at these events.

In response, the North Carolina Republican Party criticized the protests as radical, asserting that honoring the Army’s legacy should remain apolitical. A spokesperson remarked, “It’s shameful… over their hatred of President Trump.”

North Carolina Governor Josh Stein emphasized the importance of peaceful protest, stating, “The right to peacefully protest is sacred.” His office has coordinated with law enforcement to ensure safety during the demonstrations, which draw from the state’s history of nonviolent protest.

While the main festivities for the Army’s anniversary will take place in Washington, D.C., “No Kings” has planned a focused protest in Pennsylvania, providing a clear counterpoint to the celebrations.

The events represent a pivotal moment for the state as citizens exercise their First Amendment rights in a contentious political climate.
