R. Kelly Seeks Release from Prison, Citing Threat to Life Amid New Allegations
Singer R. Kelly, currently serving a 31-year sentence for sex crimes, is seeking to be released from a federal facility in North Carolina, claiming his life is in jeopardy. His attorney, Beau Brindley, filed a motion in court Tuesday, alleging that Kelly’s safety is compromised due to a supposed "hit" sanctioned by prison officials and prosecutors.
Brindley raised alarm regarding what he described as a coordinated effort to silence Kelly and prevent the exposure of alleged corruption surrounding his convictions. "These are people who seek to kill Mr. Kelly," Brindley stated during a press conference after the hearing.
Kelly, who was convicted in September 2021 on charges of racketeering, sex trafficking, and child pornography, has consistently denied the allegations. His rise from a troubled Chicago upbringing to becoming a globally recognized R&B star was overshadowed by numerous allegations of sexual abuse dating back to the 1990s.
The Bureau of Prisons confirmed Kelly’s transfer from the Metropolitan Correctional Center in Chicago to Butner in April 2023. Previously, he had attempted to secure early release due to COVID-19 concerns.
Brindley asserted that credible threats to Kelly’s life have emerged from inmates who claim they were approached by government prosecutors and Bureau of Prisons officials to carry out the alleged hit, purportedly perpetrated by white supremacists.
The Bureau of Prisons has declined to comment on the pending litigation. Moreover, Kelly’s legal team is considering a pardon request to former President Donald Trump, as they believe he is one of the few with the authority to challenge the prevailing narrative and intervene.
As of now, the White House has yet to comment on whether it has received any pardon request from Kelly’s lawyers.
