Iran Reshuffles Military Leadership Amid Escalating Conflict with Israel
Tehran, Iran – In response to a recent series of Israeli airstrikes that eliminated several top military commanders, Iran has rapidly appointed new leaders within its armed forces, heightening tensions in an already volatile region.
The strikes, which began early Friday, resulted in the deaths of Iran’s highest-ranking military personnel, including General Mohammad Bagheri, the chief of staff of the armed forces, and key figures within the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). Among those reported killed were the IRGC’s leader, Hossein Salami, and eight other senior commanders involved in Iran’s missile program.
In the wake of these significant losses, Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei appointed Brigadier General Abdolrahim Mousavi as the new chief of staff, marking a departure from tradition by choosing an army commander over an IRGC officer. Mousavi, a veteran of the Iran-Iraq war, is expected to lead Iran’s military response.
Khamenei also tapped General Mohammad Pakpour, a long-serving member of the IRGC, to take the helm of the elite force. Meanwhile, Amir Hatami, now promoted to major-general, will command the army and has vowed to retaliate decisively against Israeli aggression.
These leadership changes come as Iran has launched hundreds of drones, ballistic, and cruise missiles at Israeli targets, resulting in civilian casualties and damage to infrastructure. Reports indicate at least 14 deaths and numerous injuries in Israel, while Iranian authorities claim over 220 people, including children, have been victims of the Israeli strikes within Iran.
As the new commanders rally for a robust retaliation, banners throughout Iran proclaim, “You started the war, we will finish it." The recent developments suggest a grim trajectory for the conflict, as both nations brace for a prolonged engagement.
