Attorney General Jeff Jackson Announces Historic $7.4 Billion Settlement with Purdue Pharma
RALEIGH, NC – In a landmark agreement involving 55 attorneys general across the United States, North Carolina Attorney General Jeff Jackson has confirmed a $7.4 billion settlement with Purdue Pharma and its owners, the Sackler family. The state is projected to receive nearly $150 million from this significant settlement aimed at addressing the ongoing opioid crisis that has claimed countless lives in North Carolina and beyond.
Jackson expressed his firm stance on the accountability of Purdue Pharma and the Sackler family, stating, "They are responsible for creating the opioid epidemic that continues to take the lives of North Carolinians every single day." He stressed that this agreement not only secures crucial funding for recovery efforts but also prevents the Sacklers from continuing their operations in the pharmaceutical sector, protecting communities from potential future addiction crises.
Tare “T” Davis, President of the North Carolina Association of County Commissioners, emphasized the vital role local governments play in combating the opioid epidemic. He urged eligible local governments to sign onto the settlement to maximize the impact and ensure North Carolina receives all allocated funds, which are essential for enhancing prevention, treatment, and recovery services in communities.
The settlement includes an immediate payment plan where the Sacklers will contribute $1.5 billion, and Purdue Pharma will provide approximately $900 million in the initial payment. Additional payments will be made over the next three years, totaling $2.4 billion.
This agreement marks a pivotal step in the ongoing fight against opioid misuse, providing both financial resources and a commitment from state and local leaders to restore health and safety in affected communities.
