Texas GOP and Democratic Senators Unite to Condemn Political Violence

Texas Senate Unites Against Political Violence Following Minnesota Shooting

AUSTIN — In a powerful show of solidarity, every member of the Texas Senate issued a joint statement late Tuesday condemning political violence. This unified response comes in the wake of a tragic incident in Minnesota where former House Speaker Melissa Hortman and her husband were brutally shot, and State Senator John Hoffman was injured.

The alleged gunman, 57-year-old Vance Boelter, has been charged with multiple counts of murder and stalking. He previously attended Christ For The Nations Institute in Dallas, raising concerns about the potential for domestic political violence.

“We stand united across party lines to unequivocally condemn political violence in all forms,” stated the Senate, comprised of 20 Republicans and 11 Democrats. They expressed grief for the victims and their families while rejecting hatred and extremism.

The shockwaves from Minnesota extend to Texas, where U.S. Rep. Veronica Escobar revealed she was on Boelter’s target list, prompting heightened security measures at the state Capitol. Recent threats led the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) to evacuate the Capitol after learning of a protester allegedly planning harm against lawmakers.

Despite an arrest linked to a separate threat, the local law enforcement is still probing the incidents. House Speaker Dustin Burrows, R-Lubbock, echoed the Senate’s sentiments, asserting that threats against elected officials would not be tolerated.

In a letter to Governor Greg Abbott, Texas House Democrats called the violence in Minnesota a culmination of inflammatory political rhetoric and urged prompt action to safeguard elected officials from extremism.

As the investigation continues, Texas lawmakers emphasize a collective commitment to civility and safety in public service, reaffirming that political dissent must never justify violence.
