North Carolina’s Sports Betting Landscape Expands

North Carolina continues to enhance its sports betting framework, with significant developments marking its growth over the past year. Recent statistics show an impressive sports betting handle of $433.2 million in July 2025, reflecting an 8.8% increase from June 2024 and further solidifying the state’s position in the gambling market.

A noteworthy highlight occurred on July 2, 2025, when Charlotte’s WZGV-AM rebranded to InsideTheGame.bet, launching the state’s first radio station exclusively focused on sports betting—offering continuous VSiN programming and live gambling analysis.

Despite fluctuations in betting revenue, the North Carolina State Lottery Commission reported fluctuating online wagers reaching a remarkable $562.2 million, though down 7% from May 2024. Amidst this backdrop, legislators have debated various bills regarding taxes on betting operators. Fresh efforts have emerged to introduce tax hikes amid resistance from the North Carolina House.

Notably, the $1 billion Two Kings Casino Resort is on track to reveal its first phase by 2027, promising to elevate local entertainment options. Moreover, a bill introduced in April 2025 aims to limit prop bets on amateur and collegiate sports.

Recent months have also seen a growing online betting landscape, with prominent platforms like FanDuel, Caesars, and DraftKings leading the charge following the establishment of new compliance measures and retail partnerships.

The journey towards legal sports betting in North Carolina began in 2018 with the repeal of PASPA by the U.S. Supreme Court, culminating in the launch of online betting in March 2024 under Governor Roy Cooper’s administration. As the state continues to evolve its regulations, stakeholders anticipate a further boost in engagement as football season approaches, promising an exciting future for sports gambling in the Tar Heel State.
