Bill Chamberlain, Pioneering UNC Basketball Player, Passes Away at 75
Bill Chamberlain, a significant figure in North Carolina basketball history and the second Black player recruited by legendary coach Dean Smith, has died at the age of 75. A 6-foot-6 forward, Chamberlain was an integral part of the Tar Heels’ success in the early 1970s, earning MVP honors at the 1971 NIT and contributing to the team’s journey to the 1972 Final Four.
Born in Harlem and having honed his skills on the streets of New York, Chamberlain joined UNC in the late 1960s, following in the footsteps of the university’s first Black scholarship player, Charlie Scott. His arrival coincided with a concerted effort by Southern schools to integrate their athletic programs.
Chamberlain’s standout performance in the 1971 NIT included a memorable game against Julius Erving, where he scored 24 points, leading the Tar Heels to a dominant 90-49 victory. UNC clinched the championship title with another strong showing from Chamberlain, who scored a career-high 34 points in their championship game against Georgia Tech, earning a standing ovation from the Madison Square Garden crowd.
Throughout his college career, Chamberlain garnered accolades, including being named a second-team All-American in 1972. His professional journey included playing for the Kentucky Colonels, Memphis Tams in the ABA, and the Phoenix Suns in the NBA, though his career was truncated by a back injury.
Chamberlain’s legacy extends beyond basketball; he found strength through the support of teammates after personal tragedy and later contributed to public safety efforts in Raleigh. His passing was confirmed by UNC, marking the end of an era for a player who cherished his time with the Tar Heels, stating, "That I was lucky enough to go to Carolina" was his top athletic highlight.
