Tragic Shooting at Elizabeth City State University Claims One Life, Injures Six
Elizabeth City State University (ECSU), a historically Black college in eastern North Carolina, was the site of a tragic shooting early Sunday morning that resulted in one death and six injuries. The incident occurred on campus following Yard Fest, the culmination of the university’s weeklong Viking Fest celebration.
The deceased was a 24-year-old man who was not a student at ECSU. His identity has not been released pending family notification. Among the wounded, four sustained gunshot injuries, including three students, while two other students were injured during the ensuing chaos. All victims received hospital treatment, and none of the injuries are considered life-threatening.
In response to the shooting, ECSU implemented a temporary campus lockdown, which was later lifted. The university has since increased police patrols and maintained restricted access to the campus center as a precautionary measure. ECSU, with a student population of approximately 2,300, is located about 50 miles south of Norfolk, Virginia. The university expressed deep sorrow over the incident, stating, "The university is deeply saddened by this senseless act."
The shooting has raised concerns about campus safety and prompted discussions on measures to prevent such incidents in the future. Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting and are urging anyone with information to come forward.
