Keir Starmer has promised that those involved in the riots in Southport will face the full force of the law after police vehicles were set on fire and officers were attacked. The violence erupted after far-right protesters targeted a mosque following a knife attack that killed three children. Prime Minister Boris Johnson condemned the violence, saying it was disrespectful to the grieving community.
During the chaos, 22 officers were injured, including some with serious injuries. Police dogs were also injured as rioters threw bricks and other objects at them. As the situation escalated, police introduced enhanced stop and search powers and dispersal orders to bring the disorder under control.
The violence broke out after a peaceful vigil for the victims turned into a far-right protest that quickly became violent. Protesters threw missiles at police, set fires, and damaged property in the area. False accusations about the attacker were spread on social media, leading to further tensions.
Southport’s MP condemned the attacks on emergency services, acknowledging their response to the tragic incident. The community came together to support those affected by the attack, with a vigil held outside the Atkinson arts venue. Law enforcement agencies from neighboring areas were called in to support the overwhelmed local police force.
The violence has been widely condemned, with calls for those responsible to be identified and brought to justice. The community has been left in shock by the events and is rallying together for support and solidarity.
