Mediators of Sudan war welcome new promises on humanitarian access, Conflict News reports

Countries working to end the war in Sudan have called for unrestricted access to bring humanitarian aid to the war-torn country amid a growing humanitarian crisis. International mediators welcomed decisions by both warring sides in Sudan to ease the delivery of relief to Darfur and Kordofan states. The United States, Saudi Arabia, Switzerland, Egypt, the United Arab Emirates, the African Union, and the United Nations praised the opening of the Adre border crossing with Chad and called on the parties to coordinate with humanitarian partners for full access.

The conflict in Sudan, which began last year, has led to widespread displacement and hunger. More than 25 million people are facing acute hunger in the country, according to the IPC. The Sudanese army and the Rapid Support Forces have been competing for power, leading to violence and civilian harm. The RSF recently attacked a village in Sennar, resulting in casualties, amidst ongoing negotiations in Geneva.

The US has been actively involved in the peace process in Sudan, urging the Sudanese Armed Forces to join the talks. Efforts to establish civilian rule in Sudan post-Bashir have been challenging, with a coup against the civilian government in 2021 leading to continued conflict. Despite recent diplomatic ties between Sudan and the US, humanitarian needs and political instability remain pressing issues in the country.

Efforts are ongoing to end the fighting, provide aid to those most in need, and prevent a worsening famine in Sudan. The international community continues to push for negotiations and access for humanitarian assistance to address the dire situation in the war-torn African nation.
