Former President Donald Trump made a return to North Carolina over the weekend at an event in Wilmington where he announced a plan to end sanctuary cities.
During the event, Trump pledged to increase federal law enforcement in cities that do not comply with ICE detainer requests and to capture criminal migrants being harbored illegally. He also touched on other key issues such as reducing household item prices, saving thousands of dollars for American families, and cutting energy costs.
In North Carolina, several counties currently do not comply with ICE detainers, sparking controversy over immigration policies. Governor Roy Cooper vetoed a bill that would require sheriffs to cooperate with ICE across the state.
The Carolina Journal’s September poll shows that inflation/prices, immigration, and jobs/economy are the top issues for North Carolina voters. Notably, Vice Governor Mark Robinson, who Trump had previously endorsed, was absent from the rally amid controversy over past racially and sexually charged comments.
During the event, Congressman Dan Bishop referenced the CNN report about Robinson’s comments and accused Democrats of launching a character assassination campaign against Republican candidates.
Trump also announced that he would not participate in a third debate, citing that early voting had already begun in some states. He referenced his previous debates with Joe Biden and Kamala Harris as reasons why another debate would be unnecessary.
Overall, Trump’s return to North Carolina sparked discussions on immigration policies, economic issues, and political controversies, setting the tone for the upcoming elections in the state.
