Spain Flooding: Rescue Workers Continue Search for Survivors as Death Toll Predicted to Increase – Latest News Updates

Authorities have confirmed that a mother and baby were among the victims swept away in floods in the Valencia suburbs that resulted in around 40 confirmed deaths. Tens of thousands of homes are without electricity and drinking water, and roads are blocked by vehicles swept away in torrents. This week’s floods were the worst in Spain since 1996.

The floods have been attributed to a weather phenomenon known as the “gota fría” which occurs when cold air moves over warm Mediterranean waters, leading to heavy rain and thunderstorms. Experts believe the warming of the Mediterranean contributes to the severity of these rains.

Rescue efforts have been extensive, with 200 ground rescues and 70 aerial evacuations carried out by emergency services. The death toll in Valencia and neighboring regions has reached 95, with search and rescue operations ongoing. More rain is forecasted for the affected areas in the coming days.

Spain’s central government has deployed over 1,100 soldiers and established a crisis committee to coordinate rescue efforts. The Defense Minister has stated that a military unit specialized in rescue operations will search for victims with sniffer dogs in the worst-hit areas. Unfortunately, the number of victims is expected to increase. More heavy rain is predicted for the region, adding to the challenges faced by rescue teams and citizens affected by the floods.
