Former Tar Heels from the University of North Carolina have been making their mark in Minor League Baseball, with several players celebrating division titles in the first half of the 2024 season. Kyle Datres, Austin Bergner, Angel Zarate, and Davis Palermo were all key contributors to their teams’ success. With 25 UNC lettermen currently in the minor leagues, the program is well represented as these players work towards their goal of reaching the Majors.
Carolina has a strong history of producing Major League players, with 74 alumni making it to the highest level, thanks in part to the coaching of Mike Fox and Scott Forbes. Since 2002, 34 former Tar Heels have played in the MLB. Current Triple-A and Double-A rosters feature 13 former UNC players, with more expected to join them in the future.
Among these players, Skye Bolt, Kent Emanuel, Trevor Kelly, Brian Moran, Cody Roberts, Logan Warmoth, and others are showcasing their talent in Triple-A. Austin Bergner, Kyle Datres, Brandon Martorano, Caleb Roberts, Aaron Sabato, and Justice Thompson are making their mark in Double-A, while prospects like Max Carlson, Tomas Frick, Mac Horvath, and Danny Serretti are proving their skills in Single-A.
Overall, the current cohort of Tar Heels in the minor leagues are making strides towards their goal of playing in the Major Leagues, with many players already displaying impressive statistics and contributing to their teams’ success across different levels of competition.
