Alzheimer’s Association Provides Support for 373,000 Caregivers in North Carolina

Alzheimer’s Association Urges Caregivers to Prioritize Their Health During Awareness Month

RALEIGH – This November, as the nation observes National Family Caregivers and National Alzheimer’s Disease Awareness Month, the Alzheimer’s Association Eastern North Carolina Chapter stresses the importance of caregivers’ health amidst the demands of caregiving. With over 373,000 caregivers in North Carolina tending to more than 210,000 individuals living with Alzheimer’s, the need for self-care has never been more urgent.

Christine John-Fuller, executive director of the chapter, emphasized, “Caregivers must make their health and well-being a priority to provide the best care possible.” The emotional toll of caregiving can lead to increased stress, anxiety, and worsening health problems, putting caregivers at risk.

Statistics reveal that 59% of dementia caregivers report high emotional stress, while 38% experience high physical stress. Notably, many caregivers face financial hardships due to job disruptions and healthcare costs.

To combat these challenges, the Alzheimer’s Association advises caregivers to take breaks, educate themselves about dementia, and build a support network. “No one should face dementia caregiving alone,” John-Fuller urged, citing the importance of community support and professional assistance, if needed.

Underlining the theme of resilience, the Alzheimer’s Association will host numerous free educational programs throughout central and eastern North Carolina this November. These workshops will cover topics ranging from effective communication with dementia patients to navigating holiday stress during caregiving.

The Alzheimer’s Association remains a vital resource for those managing the dual challenges of caregiving and personal health, ensuring no caregiver feels isolated in their journey.
